Shri Anup Jalota and Shri Sunil Alagh, both Hon’ble Members of the Prasar Bharati Board, Shri Mukesh Sharma, Additional Director General, Mumbai Doordarshan, Ms Juhi Chavala, members of the Selection Jury, all the distinguished recipients of the Sahyadri Nav Ratna Sanman, invitees, ladies and gentlemen,

At the outset I thank Doordarshan Kendra Mumbai for instituting the Nav Ratna Sanman and honouring excellence in various areas.

I understand that the Sahyadri Nav Ratna Awards was the brainchild of Shri Mukesh Sharma. It is nice to see the Nav Ratna Sanman gaining in stature with every passing year.

During the last 14 years, the Sahyadri Nav Ratna awards have maintained highest standards of credibility, the credit of which goes to the most distinguished Jury Members representing various walks of life.

I convey my appreciation to Doordarshan and to all the Members of the Selection Jury for selecting the best of personalities for the Nav Ratna Awards.

    Ladies and gentlemen,

Huan Tsang, renowned Chinese traveler, had visited Maharashtra between 640 – 641 AD. He was impressed by the prosperity of the region. The Chinese Traveler had made two interesting observations about Maharashtra and its people.

His first observation was that the people of Maharashtra were learned, hard-working and of a high moral stature.

There is no doubt, and no change, in his observation even after 1300 years since he wrote those lines ! Maharashtra remains a Gold Mine of learned and hard-working people with high moral stature.

The second observation recorded by the Chinese Traveler was that the soil of Maharashtra was rich and fertile and was regularly cultivated.

Even today, the soil is rich and fertile and cultivated regularly. Unfortunately agriculture has come under stress in some other areas, particularly in Marathwada due to acute scarcity of water and global climatic changes.

The drought situation in Marathwada has brought the issue of water conservation and management of water resources into sharp focus. Today we are honouring Shri Nana Patekar, who alongwith Shri Makarand Anaspure, has started the NAM Foundation and is doing remarkable work for the drought affected farmers and their families.

I am equally happy that we are honouring Shri Anil Jain of Jain Irrigation System. The Jain Irrigation has emerged as a global leader in micro irrigation system and renewable energy. We want the Jain Irrigation to work closely with the government of Maharashtra, with farmers of the State and with our agricultural universities for the sustainable development of agriculture.

Maharashtra is regarded as the economic engine of the nation. However, Maharashtra is also the Cultural Hub of India. The State is a leader in Arts and Fine Arts, including Music, Dance, Literature, Sculpture, Architecture, Paintings and many other areas. I am very happy that we are honouring Sahitya Ratna, Natya Ratna, Shikshan Ratna, Seva Ratna, Kala Ratna and Sangeet Ratna today. All our awardees are truly the Pride of India.

India has already emerged as the Youthful Nation in the world. In the next five years, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years. Youths of the country will be bringing dynamism and change in all areas of excellence through their innovation and work.

I will call upon Door Darshan and more particularly to Shri Mukesh Sharma to institute Yuva Ratna Awards to recognize young enterpreneuers, business leaders, innovators, researchers, sportspersons, young artists, young musicians and other youth change-makers through such awards.

With these words, I convey my appreciation to all Sahyadri Nav Ratnas for their outstanding services to the State through their chosen field and wish the Door Darshan Kendra Mumbai success in its future endeavours.

    Thank you

    Jai Hind. Jai Maharashtra.
