    Brief Biodata of Shri Ramesh Bais, Governor of Maharashtra

    Shri Ramesh Bais was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra on 18 February 2023. Shri Bais is a respected name in the politics of the erstwhile state of Madhya Pradesh and the present Chhattisgarh as well as in national politics.

    Shri Bais has more than five decades of experience in parliamentary politics, social work and organization work. He has held various responsibilities in public life ranging from Councilor to Union Minister of State and Governor.

    Born on August 2, 1947 in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Mr. Ramesh Bais was educated in Raipur.

    In 1978, he was elected as councilor in Raipur Municipal Corporation for the first time. He was an elected member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Council from 1980 to 1985. In the year 1989, Shri Bais was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time from Raipur. He went on to set the record of getting elected to Lok Sabha from Raipur for seven consecutive terms.

    In the year 1998, Shri Ramesh Bais was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Steel and Mines in the cabinet of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

    During the period from 1999 to 2004, he served first as the Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers and then as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting.

    In the year 2003 Shri Ramesh Bais was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Union Ministry of Mines and as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

    From 2009 to 2014, Mr. Ramesh Bais was the Chief Whip of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha. During the period from 2014 to 2019, when he was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha, he was the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment. Shri Bais has done extensive work on the issue of rights of persons with disabilities as well as transgender persons.

    Shri Ramesh Bais was appointed as the Governor of Tripura on 29 July 2019, the post he held till 13 July 2021. He was then transferred to the post of Governor of Jharkhand on 14th July 2021. On February 18th, 2023, Shri Ramesh Bais assumed charge as the 20th Governor of Maharashtra.

    During his tenure as the Governor of Tripura, Shri Bais encouraged bamboo products. As the Governor of Jharkhand, Shri Bais played a crucial role in preventing the holy Jain pilgrimage ‘Shri Sammed Shikharji’ from being declared a tourist destination. After coming to Maharashtra, Shri Bais was instrumental in the rescue and rehabilitation of camels brought to Maharashtra for slaughter.

    Governor Shri Ramesh Bais is a dedicated social worker. He organized health camps, eye check-up camps and sports competitions in rural areas. Shri Ramesh Bais has also served as the President of Chhattisgarh Archery Olympic Association. He has also served as the chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Seeds and Agriculture Development Corporation. Shri Bais is fond of woodcraft and has made idols of many gods and goddesses.

    Maharashtra is fortunate to have got such a versatile personality as its Governor.
