Profile of Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra

Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, is a distinguished personality hailing from the royal lineage of the Manikya dynasty of Tripura.

The Manikya dynasty is not only one of India’s earliest but also among the most progressive, having introduced Tripura’s first written Constitution in 1941 aimed at promoting civic ideals of self-help, cooperation, and devotion to the state.

A key feature of the Constitution was the reservation of seats in the legislature for minorities, backward communities, and labourers, reflecting their vision for modern thought to guide Tripura’s progress and prosperity. It was all done well before these became widespread in the country.

Despite his royal heritage, Shri Jishnu Dev Varma remains remarkably humble, approachable, and eager to connect with people from all walks of life.

He embarked on his political journey with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1993 and was elected as a National Council member representing Tripura. He held the position of General Secretary, overseeing organizational matters for the Tripura Pradesh BJP.

In 2018, Shri Jishnu Dev Varma contested the State Assembly Election from the 19 Charilam ST Constituency, where he garnered an unprecedented victory securing 89.33% of the total votes cast.

During his five-year tenure, he focused on delivering projects, securing finances, and meeting deadlines.

Bio Village 2.0, implemented successfully in Tripura, is an innovative initiative of Shri Varma ji aimed at promoting sustainable development in rural areas by integrating eco-friendly practices into agriculture, energy, and livelihood activities.

With a strong emphasis on community participation, Bio Village 2.0 supported local farmers and households in adopting green technologies and sustainable practices, positioning Tripura as a leader in sustainable rural development. This initiative has been recognised as one the best international practices subsequently.

Shri Jishnu Dev Varma played a pivotal role in shaping policies for the North Eastern Region. He was prominent member of the North-Eastern Council Advisory Committee from 1989 to 1993.

He also served as the Convener of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Tripura Chapter and coordinated initiatives for the Trust in the North-East.

A multifaceted artist, his creative spirit finds expression in modern art, paintings, and sculptures. His works, infused with vibrant themes, grace various tourist spots, temples, and public spaces, often in collaboration with Sanskar Bharati.

A poet and writer of repute, his poetry in Bengali and English has touched the hearts of many. His works, notably featured in his books “Children of Water Goddess” and “Master of Time,” are celebrated for their evocative and lyrical quality.

He envisions life as a profound journey, where each moment is a sacred offering and every challenge serves as a chance to grow in wisdom and resilience. In his own poetic words, he beautifully captures this outlook:

“Let us carry hope in our souls,
    Not only for ourselves,
    But for those too,
Who look upon us with hope.”

He possesses a deep and passionate commitment to Tribal Development, education, health, and art & culture.
