Maha Governor presides over 167th Income Tax Day Celebrations in Mumbai
Compliments Department for transitioning from ‘feared’ to ‘friendly person’

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma today complimented the Income Tax Department for transforming itself to a people friendly institution by enhancing transparency, reducing litigation, improving ease of compliance and strengthening public trust in the tax system. He complimented the Income Tax department for transforming itself from being ‘the feared taxman’ to a ‘friendly person’.

The Governor was speaking at the 167th Income Tax Day celebrations organised by the Income Tax department at Kautilya Bhavan, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai on Fri (24 July).

The Governor said the contribution of the Income Tax department assumes great significance as India aspires to become a $5 trillion-plus economy. He noted that revenue generated through taxation has helped India build public schools, hospitals, roads, infrastructure and various welfare schemes, making it indispensable to the country’s progress.

The Governor expressed pride that Maharashtra continues to be the largest contributor to the country’s direct tax collections, with Mumbai retaining its position as the financial capital of India.

Referring to major infrastructure projects in Mumbai, the Governor said transformative initiatives such as the Mumbai Metro expansion, the Coastal Road Project, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor are tangible examples of how taxpayer contributions are improving mobility, strengthening connectivity, boosting economic growth and preparing the city for the future.

The Governor endorsed the view that Advance Tax is contributing towards the nation’s advancement. He said advance tax should be seen as a social responsibility by the taxpayer.

Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai Alok Kumar noted that filing income tax returns has become as simple as ordering groceries or food online. He said while it took 82 days to process Income Tax returns in the year 2019, today it is done in a few days. He said even refunds are processed in no time. He said among all arms of Government, the Income Tax department is a leader in adopting new technology. He said the contribution of Mumbai to the national income is greater than that of many states in the country.

Film star Vicky Kaushal complimented the department on its Foundation Day and felt that he felt proud to be part of the Income Tax day celebrations.
