Governor Koshyari presides over meeting to resolve Gondwana University issues
Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of public universities in the State Bhagat Singh Koshyari accompanied by Minister of Forests Sudhir Mungantiwar attended a meeting to discuss various problems of Gondwana University at Raj Bhavan in Nagpur.
The meeting discussed issues such as acquiring land for the University’s campus at Adpalli in a time bound manner, flow of funds for securing the land, acquiring the status of a Forest and Tribal University, creating employment opportunities for the locals and designing skill development programmes.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor asked the District Collector of Gadchiroli to issue a Notification regarding acquisition of land. He asked to complete the process expeditiously in a time bound manner. The Governor said rehabilitation of youths from the affected families should be done on priority.
Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that the Gondwana is a unique university in the world having maximum area under forest. He said efforts should be made to get the University the status of a Forest and Tribal University. He said the University should introduce courses that would encourage Innovation, Invention and Skill development.
Speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor Dr Prashant Bokare said the Gondwana University has 177 affiliated colleges. He said the University is going to require Rs.11.47 crore to complete land acquisition. He said that efforts are under way to offer skill based courses to 12th drop out students. He said the University is already offering various skill development courses and added that it will encourage eco tourism and Jungle Darshan. He also informed that the University is considering starting a sub centre in Chandrapur.
Gadchiroli MLA Dr Devrao Holi, Principal Secretary Forests Venugopal Reddy, Principal Secretary Higher and Technical Education Vikas Chandra Rastogi, Nagpur Divisional Commissioner Vijayalaxmi Bidri, Finance Secretary Shaila A, Gadchiroli Collector Sanjay Meena, vice chancellor of Gondwana University Gadchiroli Dr Prashant Bokare and Director of Higher Education Shailendra Devlankar were prominent among those present.
