“Acceptance of Degree by Ustad Zakir Hussain is an honour for Mumbai University”: Governor Koshyari
Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today said that by honouring legendary Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain with Doctor of Laws, the University of Mumbai is honouring itself. He said the award for Ustad Zakir Hussain will inspire the young generation to excel in life.
Governor Koshyari who is also the Chancellor of Universities in Maharashtra was speaking at the Special Convocation organised by the University of Mumbai to confer the degree Doctor of Laws upon Ustad Zakir Hussain at the Cawasji Jehangir Convocation Hall of the University of Mumbai on Thursday (12 May).
The Governor also presented the Doctor of Literature to doyen of polyester industry Shashikant Garware and the Doctor of Science to renowned scientist Dr Mukund Chorghade.
The Governor said unlike politicians who do not like fellow politicians to go ahead of them, music Gurus are happy to see their disciples excelling and achieving greater glory in their chosen fields.
Stating that the National Education Policy allows students to pursue Music along with Science, he expressed the hope that if NEP is implemented properly, universities will produce more talented people like Ustad Zakir Hussain and industrialist Shashikant Garware.
Ustad Zakir Hussain termed the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws as a blessing from the masters and dedicated the degree to his illustrious father and Tabla legend late Ustad Alla Rakha.
Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant announced the opening of the Bharat Ratna Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar College of Music and Museum in the University of Mumbai on the birth anniversary of late Lata Mangeshkar. He said that the government of Maharashtra has already made a provision of Rs. 100 crore for the College. He sought the cooperation of Usha Mangeshkar, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan and others in designing the curriculum of the programmes to be offered by the College.
Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai Dr Suhas Pednekar, Pro Vice Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni, renowned artists Vijay Ghate, Satyajit Talwalkar, Pt Vibhav Nageshkar, Rakesh Chaurasia and Shankar Mahadevan were among those present.
