Vice President inaugurates Jain Exhibition at Lok Bhavan

The Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, inaugurated a Jain literature exhibition at Maharashtra Lok Bhavan on Saturday (21st) during his visit to attend the Jain Diksha Mahotsav.

Along with the Governor, Jishnu Dev Varma, and the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, the Vice President visited the exhibition showcasing Jain Tirthankar idols and ancient Jain manuscripts.

The Vice President stated that the teachings of Mahavira are more relevant today than ever before. Through his life, he conveyed the message of renunciation and simple living. He further noted that Jainism has a noble tradition of renouncing worldly attachments and dedicating oneself to the service of society, which is truly exemplary. Referring to history, he mentioned that at one time nearly two-thirds of the population of Tamil Nadu followed Jainism and that Jain monks made immense contributions to Tamil literature.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma observed that Jainism has played a significant role in preserving Indian culture. He noted that the Diksha tradition is an integral part of Sanatan culture and highlighted the contributions of the Jain community even in northeastern states like Tripura and Nagaland.

The Governor emphasized that the tradition of renouncing all material wealth and embracing asceticism is unique to India. He explained that non-violence is not limited to physical actions; even violent thoughts constitute a form of violence. True धर्म (dharma), he said, lies in ahimsa, which paves the path to success.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Jain community contributes significantly to the country’s gross income and is also at the forefront of philanthropy. He highlighted that Jainism considers not only the welfare of human beings but also that of all living and non-living entities, including subtle life forms.

Appreciating the efforts of the Jain community in preserving ancient manuscripts, the Chief Minister appealed for their support in the restoration of old temples across the state.

On this occasion, the Vice President felicitated youths who undertook Jain Diksha as well as donors who contributed to the preservation of Jain literature.

Minister for Skill Development Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Managing Trustee of Shri Adhyatma Parivar Trust Hitendra Mota, and trustees Rajesh Chandan and Babulal Bhansali were present at the event.

Earlier, on 8th February at Borivali, a total of 18 men and 46 women from different states and age groups embraced Jain Diksha, marking the occasion for organizing the Jain Diksha Mahotsav.
