Pandit Birju Maharaj was India’s cultural ambassador to the world

The Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari has expressed grief over the demise of Kathak Guru Padmavibhushan Pt Birju Maharaj. In a condolence message Governor Koshyari wrote:

“Pandit Birju Maharaj dedicated his entire life to the cause of propagation and popularization of classical dance. He brought Indian classical dance closer to the masses. He was India’s cultural ambassador to the world. Birju Maharaj was open to experimentation and welcomed innovative ideas in dance. He was also a good vocalist and Tabla artist. Pt Birju Maharaj had close bonds with Maharashtra. By mentoring many disciples, he passed on his art to new generations in the best of Indian tradition. I offer my homage to the great Kathak Guru and convey my heartfelt condolences to his disciples and family.”
